MY BACKGROUND
Where it all began
I’ve been a career physical fitness professional and healthy lifestyle coach for over 30 years. After a degree in Exercise Science, I began in the health club industry, in program director roles for group exercise and personal training. Eventually I trained and certified to the advanced/master level in Pilates, and became owner of my own studio in 2008. As a specialist in this area for over 24 years, I developed a schema combining corrective exercise with Pilates to rebalance the body’s alignment, muscle patterns and improve spinal stabilization to reduce pain and injury from degenerative conditions. After a decade working with many clients referred from physical therapy, who successfully trained out of pain and back to great fitness, I sold my studio to focus on holistic health and nutrition and functional fitness.
MY STORY
Why I Became A Consultant in Holistic Health & Nutrition
As an exercise professional, I was always passionate about teaching healthy lifestyle habits in more than just physical activity, and regularly provided speaking presentations on these topics like whole food eating, metabolism and fascial health. Then in 2018, following a difficult time in my life, I began my own experience of living in chronic pain for several years. As one can imagine, as a physical fitness expert, highly-trained in Pilates, regular swimmer, trail-runner and healthy eater, this pain was not only vexing to me but affected my life and self-image on many levels. My “aha” moment came during a physical therapy session with a trusted colleague, a well-known physical therapist and friend, informed me the pain was not due strictly to physical causes, but was caused by my “nervous system” due to ongoing stress and difficult emotions. Although I didn’t know it at the time, this moment changed my life forever. I immediately began studying everything I could get my hands on regarding the role of emotions and stress and the nervous system in chronic pain and nerve sensitivity. Right away, I started changing my daily life to restore balance in my nervous system in two ways: externally, through eliminating habits that were increasing my stress and inflammation, and internally, through becoming aware of my habitual thoughts and emotions and reframing them to shift my body chemistry to a healthier, healing state. When the pain I had been in for over 3 years was gone after about 7 weeks, I knew that this was now what I wanted and needed to teach—lifestyle change.
In 2019, I gave two sold-out presentations on the Nervous System & Chronic Pain and my transition into speaking and health coaching officially began. I became certified as a Holistic Health & Wellness Coach and a Holistic Nutritionist and today write, speak and consult with private clients in healthy lifestyle habit change for optimal aging. My transformation to feeling younger, stronger and healthier at over 55-years-old than I was decades ago, maintains my belief everyday in the power of healthy lifestyle choices as the greatest determinant and creating force of incredible health, at any age.
